Tom was just starting his gardening business. He supplied me with a list of his services, a few photos, an idea of the area he was willing to travel within, and left the rest up to me.
I began by researching Tom’s local competitors to see what they were doing online. I reviewed their websites for content and style and looked at how actively they used social media. I then looked further afield at websites for gardening and landscaping businesses across the UK. The majority of sites I came across had uninspiring designs and looked like they had been made on the cheap.
I compiled a list of the important keywords that would need to be present on the website, wrote the content text, which Tom reviewed and approved with a few minor revisions.
A one-page site fits the bill
A one-page website satisfied Tom’s requirements perfectly. A one-page approach is different from the majority of gardening sites which typically comprise of Home, Services, Gallery, Region, and Contact pages. There was no need to conform to that when everything could be said and presented succinctly on a single page.
I used a fresh green colour for headings, highlight areas and buttons. Tom didn’t have a logo so I created one with two-tone green for the text, sourced a suitable graphic, and amended the colours to suit. The logo has been embroidered on t-shirts and fleeces.
The site features examples of Tom’s work and customer testimonials using carousels for visual interest.
Tom received a customer enquiry through the website within hours of going live, and in the months since he’s reported the website frequently generates more work than he can handle.
Cutting the competition down to size
The website consistently ranks in the top positions on page one in Google’s organic search results for Tom’s target region: Worthing, Hove and Brighton. An excellent result for such a modest site.
To support the launch of the website I created a Google Adwords advertising campaign to bring customers to Tom. The adverts generated new business enquiries and enabled Tom to start work immediately and build his client base. Now, most of the time the Adwords are switched off because the website brings in sufficient visitors and enquiries on its own.
